About Recipe Cost Calculators
Recipe Cost Calculators is a small, independent site with one job: give restaurant owners, caterers, food-truck operators and home bakers who sell the costing tools that inventory software charges $200 a month for, free, with the industry benchmarks printed next to the answer.
Who runs this
The site is built and maintained by Nick, owner of Rolling Oven, a wood-fired pizza and taproom business with multiple locations in the Lexington, Kentucky area. He has costed more recipes on the back of an invoice than he'd like to admit, and the calculators here are the spreadsheets he actually uses, cleaned up for the public. If a number looks off or there's a tool you wish existed, say so.
Where the numbers come from
Benchmarks come from the National Restaurant Association's annual Restaurant Operations Data Abstract (food cost and labor medians), the USDA (food price outlook and cooking yields), distributor yield tables (US Foods), culinary textbooks (BCcampus, Penn State) and the published research on menu pricing (Cornell). Trade-source rules of thumb from POS and scheduling vendors are labeled as such. Every page cites its sources at the bottom.
How the estimates work
Each calculator applies the standard formulas, the same ones in any hospitality management textbook, to the figures you enter, and shows the arithmetic. Your inputs stay in your browser. The results are planning estimates: your invoices, counts and P&L are the final word, and none of this is accounting or legal advice.
Independence and how the site makes money
We are not affiliated with any POS, inventory, scheduling or food-distribution company. The site shows ads and may include affiliate links to tools we'd recommend anyway; that never changes the math. If you give us your email to unlock a result, we use it to send a short costing checklist and occasional benchmark updates, and you can unsubscribe with one click. We never sell it.
